For the first day this year, Emma is staying home from school because she is sick. I was advised that she needed to be home for 24 hours after I gave her the first round of antibiotics last night!
Emma has been coughing for a bout a week, but has little to no nasal congestion. I found it weird, but attributed the cough to allergies. Two nights ago, she started having "cough attacks", and neither of us got any sleep. plus I noticed some congestion in her lungs and she was making weird breathing sounds. So, I broke down and took her to the pediatrician. She started with a breathing treatment to see if it was bronchitis, not much help, okay lets do an xray (at another location where we have to wait in a waiting room) to rule out pneumonia... nope looks good. What diagnosis is left? Whooping cough. That's right, Emma was tested for whooping cough and we will get the results in a few days. In the mean time, she is being treated as though she has it. A full round of antibiotics and an inhaler for the gunk in her chest and the harsh cough.
So Emma is as happy as a clam to enjoy her day in bed with coloring books and crayons. But in my heart, I know the results will come back negative and she has a bad chest cold!!!! We'll see though. It took all I had to call her in ill today at school, but if she is in fact infectious, it was definitely the right thing to do.

Whooping cough...that would be one diagnosis we haven't had! We have gone through croup, bronchiolitis, and asthma...
I can't believe this is her first day home sick! What a healthy kid! :) Hopefully antibiotics kick whatever it is though and you get some sleep!
Mallory had the something similar, but with a fever that lasted for almost two weeks. I hope Emma gets better soon!
